Design & Development of LED Indication (Schneider Electric)

Date

April 2022

Role

R&D Intern

Objective:
To enhance the functionality and safety of the existing ROM used as an accessory on MCCBs by integrating an electrically operated LED indication.

Project Description:
The Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCCB) is a critical component in electrical distribution systems, providing protection against overcurrents. The Rotary Operated Mechanism (ROM) is an accessory that is mounted on top of the MCCB to serve as a safety device, allowing users to manually operate the MCCB.
The objective of this project was to upgrade the existing ROM by integrating an electrically operated LED indication. This enhancement aimed to provide users with a visual indication of the MCCB's status, improving user satisfaction and safety.

Responsibilities:
Conducted a thorough background study of MCCBs and the functionality of ROMs in electrical distribution systems.
Designed the LED indication system using CAD software (PTC Creo) to ensure seamless integration with the existing ROM.
Collaborated with cross-functional teams, including engineers and designers, to refine the design and ensure compatibility with various MCCB models.
Developed and prototyped an independent mechanism using microswitches to control the LED indication.
Conducted rigorous tests, including Mechanical Endurance and Electrical Endurance, to ensure the functionality and reliability of the upgraded ROM.
Documented and presented project progress and results to the management team.

Outcome:
Successfully upgraded the existing ROM for MCCBs, integrating an electrically operated LED indication.
Enhanced user satisfaction by providing a visual indication of the MCCB's status.
Improved safety by enabling users to easily identify the state of the MCCB.
Achieved a seamless integration of the LED indication system with various MCCB models.
Contributed to the advancement of safety features in electrical distribution systems.
